In Action International (RIA) is comprised of individuals from all walks of life
who share the common goal of eliminating the stigma of mental illness and ending
discrimination by bringing |
| recovery
to the community. We are demonstrating and teaching others the reality of recovery
through changed lives, educational presentations and multimedia communications. |
In 2006, a psychiatrist with a personal history of mental
illness began publicly sharing his experience of severe clinical depression and
recovery with the larger community to "promote recovery and eliminate the stigma
of mental illness, to give hope to others and encourage them to seek the support
they need to heal."
RIA began in 2007 when he was giving a presentation
at a local church about his personal and professional experience, and discussing
the Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) of California. A mental health advocate
was so moved by his honesty and humility, that she approached him afterwards.
This evolved into a collaboration and common vision. This was the beginning of
Recovery In Action International.
RIA has developed a results oriented program
of education and outreach to the community. We have networked with other
individuals who are in recovery or have recovered from mental illness and substance
abuse, and formed a Speakers Bureau. We collaborate with mental health professionals,
colleges and schools, churches, organizations and individuals from the community
to share and reach out.
Thousands of people have heard RIA presentations
and seminars and have invited us back to present at conferences, seminars and
workshops.
The approach we support towards recovery is holistic and includes
mental, spiritual, physical and social avenues of healing.
We are building
a better community that welcomes, encourages and helps to heal those who have
temporarily lost their way.
